Bio & Practice

Tommy Calderón (b. 1997) is a 1st-Generation Canadian visual artist and photographer based in Toronto. He received his BFA in photography from the Toronto Metropolitan University Creative School with a minor in philosophy.

His practice explores formal and material conditions of image-making as elements that impact our identity and internal reality. Analyzing the structures and everyday experiences that inform our ideas around personal circumstances and how we live, Calderon's images explore the connections between our learned social parameters and how we become ourselves. His work often takes influence from events in his everyday life and interactions. His images offer meditative spaces that reflect our psyches within the physical existence of photographic reality.

In 2020, he presented his project Untitled N. 01 in the Reading Room Gallery of the Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto, Canada. This show was awarded through Max Ex 24 at the TMU Creative School for the 3rd-year exhibition Best in Show award, which supports the production and exhibition of a 3rd-year projects that display professional exemplary conceptual and technical promise.

In the Spring of 2022, Calderón displayed his images as part of a curated group show at the Artspace Gallery in the 401 Richmond building, Toronto, as part of the Core Exhibitions category of CONTACT Photography Festival 2022. The show, Fixations: Thoughts on Time curated by Kelsey Myler and Christina Oyawale featuring the work of Toronto-based Artist Durga Rajah.

Calderón is the recipient of professional development grants and awards that support the production and exhibition of his work.
